Marsabit District


Location:                       Eastern Province
Area:                            66,000 sq km
District Headquarters:      Marsabit (750 km from Nairobi, 570 km from Nyahururu)

Marsabit District borders Ethiopia to the north and contains Lake Turkana in the west.  It is the second largest district in Kenya, covering about 11% of the total area of the country.

The National Poverty Plan ranked Marsabit/Moyale as the poorest rural district in Kenya, with about 88% of the population living beneath the poverty line.

The communities in this district include the Borana, Gabra, Rendille, Samburu, Somali, Daasasach, El Molo, Bulji and Sakuye.
