Samburu District

Area:                            20,800 sq km
District Headquarters:      Maralal (400 km from Nairobi, 200 km from Nyahururu)
Population:                    More than 200,000

Samburu District is ranked as the second poorest rural district in Kenya, with 84% of the population living below the poverty line.  The ministry of education estimates the district to have an illiteracy level of 90%.

The numerically dominant community is the Samburu community, followed by Turkana.
