Students at Kisima School

Kisima Mixed Secondary School opened in February 2005 with its first class of forty students. Another forty joined in February 2006, another forty in February 2007 and the school reached its capacity of 160 students in 2008. 

The education of girls is undervalued in many communities of Kenya and so Kisima ensures that girls’ education is promoted by taking twenty girls and twenty boys each year. 

Normally Kenyan children start secondary school at the age of fourteen, but many of Kisima’s students are older than this as their primary education has been delayed by financial difficulties or other circumstances.

Selection of students

The students have to face stiff competition to earn their place at Kisima. The application and selection process takes about eight months:

• In May application forms are taken to feeder primary schools that have been chosen on the basis of the living conditions of the communities they serve. 
• Each school committee selects one boy and one girl for recommendation to Kisima, on the basis of their need and their academic potential to make the best out of the opportunity afforded them.
• From July the applications are considered by Kisima staff, and about sixty students are shortlisted according to sustained good performance throughout the last three years of primary school.
• In October, Kisima staff make visits to the candidates’ homes and schools to confirm that the selected children are truly deserving.
• In November the students take their primary school exams (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education).
• In early January exam results are published and final selection for Kisima is made.
