August Holiday

10 September, 2009

The Kisima students have recently enjoyed a four week holiday spent at their homes in different parts of the country.

Term two came to an end on 6th August and as usual was marked by a closing assembly in the hall. This was a chance for the teachers to report on how each class had performed in their exams, and to offer advice and encouragement to the students.  There were also many prizes to be awarded - for those who had done well in their academic work, for the neatest and most disciplined students and for the winning teams in the term's sporting activities and an end-of-term quiz.

Early the next morning it was time for everyone to head home - most setting off on foot for Nyahururu town, from where they would take vehicles to their different destinations.  Whilst some are fortunate to have only a short distance to travel, others spend several days journeying in difficult conditions before finally reaching home.  Each student was well-laden with books so they could be studying and revising whilst at home.

During the holiday we were able to visit a few students at their homes, along with our volunteer Louisa.  Not far from school we visited one of the Form One girls.  She was at home with her mother, as her ten brothers and sisters are all older than her and most have left home. She showed us around the area, including the stream where she fetches water and the section of land she would be weeding during her time at home.

Then on a trip to Baringo District, we caught up with one of the Form Four students.  Here there was a crowd of children from his family and the neighbourhood, all happy to have some new visitors.  Baringo is a semi-arid area where most people are pastoralists.  It is also a good area for honey and so we were able to see the family's bee hives.

The new term has now begun and we are glad that all the students are safely back at Kisima and busy with the activities of school life.
