Save a Life!

Last week saw a new activity taking place at Kisima, as the National Blood Transfusion Service came in search of blood donors.

Afternoon lessons were cancelled and everyone gathered in the hall to hear a talk about the importance of donating blood and the procedure involved. Then those who were willing made their way to where the equipment had been set up and a team of blood centre staff were waiting.

The first step was to fill in a form and be weighed - only those of 16 years and above, over 50kg and in good health were eligible to donate. Those who met the criteria had a drop of blood tested before proceeding to the actual blood donation.

Teacher John and lab technician Josephat led the way, followed by the Form Fours, Threes and Twos and a few other members of staff. There were a few worried faces but most seemed relaxed and even managed a smile for the camera!

After giving blood there was a soda and packet of biscuits for each donor as they rested for a few minutes. Some took the chance to chat to Verena, a German volunteer who was at Kisima for the week and who had joined the activity and given her pint of blood.

So many students were keen to donate that there wasn't enough time for them all to do so. As it was, a total of 58 pints were collected. Delighted with the response, the blood transfusion staff promised to return again.
